Objectives
1. To instill in students a desire to learn more about God through music.
2. To give students more opportunities to praise God, and share His goodness
3. To encourage students to learn about music and help them develop a love for music.
4. To encourage students to express themselves through music.
5. To teach students to understand musical forms, styles and textures, and to read music.
6. To give students an appreciation for the history of music, and show them how it relates to history, and their lives.
Classroom Rules
1. Be in your assigned place with your supplies and assignments on time. If you are not ready, you will be counted tardy and may miss any class work or quizzes given at the beginning of class. Work missed due to un-excused tardies or absences may not be made up.
2. Always raise your hand and wait to be acknowledged by the teacher before speaking.
3. Eating, drinking, and gum chewing are not allowed in the classroom. Doing these things can result in damage to instruments and other equipment. Water is allowed only in sealable containers.
5. Respect should be the top goal of everyone in the room. Students should respect all faculty and staff, other students and property, and whoever is in charge of the group, whether it is the regular teacher, a substitute, or guest.
6. Honesty is the only option - full honesty will simplify life for everyone involved. Any type of dishonesty including lying, cheating, and plagiarism will be subject to appropriate and immediate disciplinary action, and must be reported to the principal.
Classroom Discipline
The point system is meant to motivate students to gain points. If points are lost repeatedly by the same student, a parent/teacher conference will be necessary. If more action is required, students will have to be sent to the administration to be dealt with. If conditions warrant, the teacher will be obligated, with the consultation of the administration and parents, to dismiss the offender from class in order to utilize the time of those participants who wish to make progress.
Grading Policy
Grades for each day are based on a point system. The student begins each rehearsal with zero points and must earn fifteen points during the rehearsal to maintain an “A” grade. The system is as follows:
Participation points
5 points for arriving to class on time with all materials
5 points for assisting in set-up/tear-down
5 points for participation during class
To receive an A for the day all points offered must be collected.
The following number of points will be deducted for the following infractions
3 points - class disruption
5 points - forgetting supplies
5 points - refusing to participate
5 points - refusing to help set up/tear down
The teacher reserves the right to deduct points for other legitimate reasons besides the ones previously mentioned
Percentages: A = 93-100%; A- = 90-92%; B+ = 87-89%; B = 80-86%; B- = 77-79%;
C+ = 72-76%; C = 69-71%; D+ = 65-68%; D = 60-64%; D- = 56-59%; F = 55% and below
Assignments
Listening Journal: (50 points possible) Listening Journals are turned in weekly. A list of listening assignments will be handed out at the beginning of each unit. The journal will include:
Title of piece
Name of composer
Name of performer and/or group
Texture and style of piece
-
Reaction (must include: what do you hear? how does it make you feel? what emotions are expressed? what do you think the composer was trying to convey? and anything else you want to tell me about the piece.)
Unit Projects: (100 points possible) Each unit, a project will be worked on and presented to the class. All projects must include a 2-4 page research paper in the MLA style on one of the following topics:
Composer’s life and music
Specific piece of music
Specific style of music
Issues specific to the unit
Options for project presentations are:
Power point
Poster(s)
Approved writing and performing of skit
Approved recording of video
Video could be dramatization, interview, newscast, panel discussion, etc.
Newspaper article
All projects are to be approved by the teacher. Periodic progress checks will be made to ensure that procrastination is kept to a minimum. Grades are not based on how flamboyant projects become, but rather on their quality.*
Reading Assignments: From time to time, the reading of articles assigned by the teacher may be necessary. Reading assignments will be announced in advance, and information will be quizzed in class.
Quizzes: (15 points possible) Both announced and unannounced quizzes will be given. Quiz material will come from information discussed in class and from reading assignments. Quizzes may be in the form of matching, multiple choice, true and false, short answer, essay, or any combination of the above.
Project Checks: (15 points possible) From time to time, project progress checks will be made to ensure that procrastination is kept to a minimum. Students must show a significant amount of work done on the project in order to obtain full points.
Tests: (75 points possible) Tests will be given at the end of each unit. Because of the nature of the material covered in this class, test material may be cumulative. Tests will be in forms similar to quizzes. Larger final examinations will be given at the end of each semester.*
Concert Attendance: (50 points possible) At least one concert should be attended each semester. Extra credit for extra concerts may be given by choice of the teacher.
Late work policy: Late work will be accepted with a penalty of 10% off of earned points per day. After five days, late work will no longer be accepted. Work missed due to excused absences will be given up to five days from the last day of absence to be made up without penalty. After this time, the un-excused absence late work policy will be put into effect.
*Project due dates and tests are close in time because some preparation for the test is accomplished through the preparation of the project. Some studying for tests will be required, however.
